Pawley’s Front Porch was recommended to us by two friends, who said great things about the place. I’ve read rave reviews online as well! Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive Inn’s and Dives has even been there! So of course we had to see what all the hype was about!
Pawley’s is located in the Five Points area, of Downtown Columbia. Five Points is a favorite college hang out. The area is filled with quirky shops and a decent amount of bars and restaurants. Pawley’s located right on Harden St. You can’t miss it, they literally have a front porch area. This area is equipped with a bar and large flat screen tv right outside! Pawley’s is a casual place, with a sports bar type atmosphere.
As soon as you walk in, there is a large portrait on the wall of Guy Fieri! We were greeted by a hostess and led to our seats. It was pretty packed, but we were able to get seating fairly quickly. We brought the kids along, so they sat us in a large booth near the back. Before heading out there, we looked over the menu online. I was a bit worried, because they didn’t show a kids menu. Luckily, when we got there they had a kids menu. Whew!
Pawely’s is known for the burgers, so that’s what we were there for. We were also told that the Sweet Potato fries were pretty awesome too. Pawely’s burgers aren’t typical burgers. Each burger has a unique name, with unique toppings to match. You can also choose the type of bun you want your burger to be on. The kids menu, had your typical kid choices burgers, chicken strips, fries, you know.
Both of our children decided to try the Cheeseburger meal. I’ll tell you one thing…they don’t skimp on food at Pawely’s! The children’s portions were large. Probably large enough for an adult. Wait…I won’t say probably…it is large enough for an adult! Shockingly both of our kids devoured their plates. They said it was one of the best cheeseburger’s they ate. My son did say however, of course not better than In N Out. I think he has a thing for them. 😉
This is the children’s portion. They chose the shoe string French fries. I sampled some, and they were pretty good.
For my choice, I chose the Wadmalaw. This burger had chipotle BBQ sauce, fried pickle chips, applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese! Yum!
That’s the burger plated. You can’t see it in this picture, but there is a gigantic knife sticking out the top of the burger! I guess, that’s so you can cut this massive burger in half! Because, trust me you won’t be eating this one whole! Unless you’ve got some abnormally large mouth! LOL
Here is a side view of my burger. I loved the flavor of the BBQ sauce. It was really good. I couldn’t really taste the fried pickles, but they were a nice added touch. The burger itself had that home-made feel to it. You could really taste the Worcestershire in it. I actually would have preferred less of that, and more of just meat taste. That’s just me. But overall, it was really good. Good quality. I also chose Ciabatta bread which was nice too.
Please excuse the camera phone pic. This is JP’s burger. You can see the big ol’ dagger on his! Ha! He chose the Isle of Palms burger. This burger had, house made pimento cheese and jalapeno bacon. I tasted it, and it was pretty good! I don’t really dig Pimento Cheese. He got his on a Pretzel bun. The bun was very good too.
Here is an open view of his burger. You can see all that pimento cheese on there. We both agreed that the sweet potato fries were pretty awesome! They were sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. I thought it was going to be weird with ketchup because of sugar and cinnamon. It was actually good. I really like how they do their fries.
Many people think that Pawely’s serves up some of the best burgers in Columbia…period! We haven’t tried all of the burger joints here in Columbia, so we can’t quite say that they are. But, we will say they are pretty Bangin! If you want a nice casual meal. Maybe even watch the game for a little while. Then Pawley’s will be the place for you, and they are kid friendly so that’s a plus.
You can check out their menu here online:
You can even look them up on YouTube, for the Diner’s, Drive-Inns, and Dives episode.
